ZITKUS
March 3, 19143, Tuesday, Mike Zitkus, of Kincaid, machine helper, aged 30 years, married, was killed by machine in Peabody Coal Company's No. 7 mine, Kincaid, Christian County. Deceased was injured while himself and machine runner were performing the dangerous act of kicking machine from face by use of power and jack pipe placed against coal and machine bits. The regular sized fuse wire had been taken off and a piece of No. 16 insulated copper wire substituted, which provided no safety as it would not blow out under any ordinary conditions. Deceased was standing in frame of machine and when power was applied was thrown into chain, which dragged his body into frame. The machine runner failed to shut off power for some time and deceased was badly mangled. The machine was kicked 6 feet from the face. I make particular mention of this case as this dangerous practice exists in many places and should not be classed as one of the risks encountered in the occupation of mining.
