The shaker screen makes three grades of coal -- lump, nut, pea or slack, and a track is used for the refuse. The power consists of six seventy-two inch by twenty foot boilers, having eighteen six-inch flues, erected in three batteries. The pumps required are Hooker No. 10 and Cameron No. 12. The electrical equipment, which is first class in every particular, consists of a St. Louis Corlis engine 10 x 36 inches, running at a speed of eighty revolutions per minute, belted to a 100 K. W. link belt, a multipolar generator, being 400 amperes at 250 volts; a switchboard of double marble slabs, and all arrangements tor instruments for a duplicate power unit. At present there are four mining machines of different types; a Link-Belt, Morgan-Gardner, Jeffrey and Sullivan. The Sullivan is the most successful where the roof is bad, as it requires less room at the face, and the cutting made by it is only five feet deep, while the others cut seven feet. The escapement shaft is 8 x 16 feet, in two compartments, a good substantial stairway is built in one, and the other is used for ventilation. The fan is 20feet in diameter, driven by an engine 14 x 18 inches. The quantity of air found passing per minute was 65,000 cubic feet, the speed of the fan being fifty revolutions per minute. The buildings are all built of pressed brick, and in such manner as to give the works a handsome appearance, the intention being to make the mine and top works the best in the State. The same company has extended its railroad track to Troy, in Madison county, and commenced operations near that place. The main and escapement shafts have been sunk, and it is intended to equip them after the manner described at the Collinsville mine. The company has commenced to sink the third shaft about two miles south of Troy. These shafts will make the company one of the largest producers of coal in southern Illinois. Annual Coal Report14 Mine Fires The Donk Bros. Coal & Coke Co. had a fire at their No. 1 mine, destroying the tipple and washery; the loss is estimated at over $60,000. The company rebuilt the tipple and resumed work in a very short time, and is now rebuilding the washery. Coal Washing In Illinois, By : F. C. Annual Coal Report16 Improvements The Donk Bros. Coal & Coke company, Troy, Madison county, has put in two additional electric motors of ten tons each at its Troy mine: also two additional motors at its No. 1 mine near Collinsville. Annual Coal Report24 I am pleased to report the erection and putting in use of an underground hospital at the Donk Bros. Coal and Coke Company's No. 1 mine. It is built of concrete throughout, is 7 feet high by 13 x 14 feet. It is steam-heated and has hot and cold water. The temperature is kept at 90°. It is furnished with an operating table, the first aid appliances, with necessary blankets, kept in cupboard conveniently arranged, and is equipped with electric lights. The two stretchers are also kept here. In the two cases in which it has been tested it has fully met the expectations of its promoters. I believe this is the first underground hospital in the State. Mr. Wilson and the Donk Bros. Coal and Coke Company certainly deserve great credit for being the forerunners in improving mining conditions in this particular regard. ![]() Annual Coal Report25 Improvements Donk Bros, have repaired and strengthened the tower and re-timbered a portion of the hoisting shaft at the No. 1 mine. Annual Coal Report13 New Mines The Donk Bros., Coal & Coke Co. has sunk two more shafts in Madison county, one at Troy, the other at Maryville, three miles northeast of Collinsville. The equipment of these shafts is to be the same as No. 1 at Collinsville. Last year's report gives a description of the plant at the latter mine. Annual Coal report19, 20 Improvements. The Donk Bros. Coal and Coke Company of St. Louis, ]\Io., have made extensive improvements at their No. 2 mine at Marysville, Madison county. Two new boilers, each 150 horse power, and a generator of 200 K. W. have been installed. Two thirteen-ton motors have been installed. The tracks in the mine have been graded, the bottom taken up and the slate taken down and the tracks laid with forty pound T rails. A separate traveling way for the employes has been constructed, separated from the motor roads; also proper passages, so that all the caging will be done on one side of the shaft. Annual Coal Report24 Improvements Donk Bros. Coal and Coke Company has spent about $1.5,000.00 in improving the fifth east entry of the No. 2 mine and have installed a 1,500 H. P. Cochran water heater. Annual Coal Report25 Improvements Donk Bros, at the No. 2 mine, last March, the hub of the sheave wheel broke, which in turn caused the sheave to cant while it was hoisting a load; this allowed the rope to slip out. The rope severed every stay and brace between the uprights and backstays to the engine-house from the shaft, thus practically cutting the headgear in half. The headgear was so badly wrecked that a new headgear was erected after a month's idleness. A 5-foot Booster fan was put in, which greatly benefits that section of the mine. A 15-ton electric motor was also installed. Annual Coal Report26 Improvements The Donk Bros. Coal & Coke Company, a No. 2 mine, the company has installed three new mining machines, one Jeffrey, one Goodman, and one Sullivan short wall. Annual Coal Report27 Improvements Donk Bros. Coal & Coke Company at No. 2 mine, Maryville, has installed a new engine and dynamo. Thirteen breast and three short wall mining machines have replaced thirty compressed air punchers.
