In the room where deceased met his death there is about 7 inches of slate, divided into three layers of about equal thickness, that comes down with the coal when blasted or a short time after the coal has been taken down. He was loading a car with coal. The entry in which the rooms were located where he had worked that morning was driven 400 feet ahead of the air. Four rooms and a cross cut were being worked inside of the last cross cut. The rooms were all new and were just being widened out. They were mined by machines and the blasting was done about 4 o'clock in the morning by the night shift, about four shots to each room. The only ventilation available while mining the rooms was the exhaust from the machines; but as the compressor stopped when the night shift quit work, there was no provision made for removing the obnoxious gases generated by the explosion of powder used for shooting the coal. As the place was insuffciently ventilated when the work started at 7 o'clock in the morning, the air could not possibly be fit for respiration, Mr. Hoppen complained to his partner of his head, and assigned the condition of the air as being the cause. He had worked in the first room inside of the last cross cut all morning up to 11:30 a. m., and had just moved into the next room with his partner, 80 feet further in the entry, where he had worked about ten minutes. He suddenly fell over backwards. His partner immediately gave the alarm and called for help, which was prompt in responding, and he was carried back to the air course, where every effort was made to revive him, but he expired in a few minutes. KILLED IN A MINE
Irregularly fatal mine accident, perhaps, has not a precedent records of accidents in mines State of Illinois, occurred in Wilderman mine at Wilderman Junctionon, three miles south of Belleville on the Illinois Central, Tuesday afternoon, in which George Sodam, a well-known miner of this city, met his death.
Sodom lived with his wife and three children at No. 307 Mascoutah avenue. He had been at work in the mine during the day, and in the evening, when the miners were brought to the surface after their day's work was finished, it was found that Sodam was missing.
In persuance with his duties, Mine Manager Fred Betcher, upon learning that Sodam had failed to come to the surface with the other men, immediately went down in the mine in search of the missing man. After a brief searcn Betcher found Sodam sitting on the floor of an abandoned room, near the mining room in which he had been at work. Sodam was supported by a prop, which his back was resting, and his dinner bucket, pit lamp was still burning. Betcher went up to the man, a wound in his forehead and abdomen, which blood was, lifted him upon his feet, the injured man gave a gasp, fell back his head.
Manager Betcher carried Sodam's body to a pit car, and placing the body on the cage and had it taken to the surface.
The remains were conveyed to Betcher's home, and Bux's ambulance summoned, which transported the remains to the Bux re-missing     tory.
At the coroner's inquest, held by Coroner McCracken this morning, the evidence of the only two witnesses was taken; they were Manager Betcher and Thomas Daugherty, a miner. The evidence showed that Sodam had been struck by what is termed a "blown through shot", a charge of powder throwing coal into an adjoining room, instead of into the room intended.. Sodam was struck by the coal while walking through the abandoned room. He sustained a wound on the forehead, and his abdomen was torn open by the coal.
Death from accident was the verdict of the jury.
He was born August 30, 1861, in Austria, and was in his forty-second year at the time of his death. He was married in his native land on June 1, 1888, to Miss Mary Hamula, and in 1891 they came to the United States, coming to Belleville three months later. He leaves his widow and three children, Eddie, aged 10; Martha, 8; and Joseph, 5 years old. Also two brothers and three sisters in Europe.
The funeral takes place Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the residence to St. Peter's cathedral, thence to Green Mount Cemetery.
