Sanders A. SUMMERS was born in Washington County 28Oct1842.
He was the grandson of Thomas SUMMERS (born 1799, North Carolina)
who made his home in the rural Covington area and Polly BRILEY
of Tennessee and the son of John A. SUMMERS (born abt. 1820) and
Susan H. (ADAMS) SUMMERS (born abt. 1818) who made their home in the
Okawville / Covington area. John A. SUMMERS served in the Mexican War
and died of pneumonia in Jalapa, Mexico. theri sons were Sanders A.,
Addison Monroe, and Zachariah. Guardianship of the minor boys was
appointed to one Leonard G. TUCKER of Ashley, when John died. Susan
later married this man, although there are circumstances that put
this marriae is serious question. (No record of Leonard G.
TUCKER can be found in the courthouse in Nashville, Illinois,
even though he was supposably a Justice of the Peace as well as
a Saloon owner, in the mid-1800's.)

Sanders served with the 44th Illinois Infantry
Company F until he was transferred (or re-enlisted) in the 16th
Illinois Calvary, Company I, his rank was private.
He was captured on 3 January 1864 and was sent by transport train
to the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was released 11
months later on 1 December 1864 and exchanged for Southern prisoners
in Columbus, Ohio. Contracting rickets and scurvey while at
Andersonville he continued to suffer from the effects of the
maladies for the rest of his life.

Sanders married Elizabeth MARKHAM 17 Jan 1866,
in Washington County, Illinois.
(married by : Leonard G. TUCKER, JP).
They made their home in Ashley.
Their three daughters were born there and their
names were Etta Belle (who married Hugh "Berry"
SMITH [who is pictured here]); Florence (who married
william SHELTON); and Eva (who married Jasper VAUGHN).
Decendants of theirs can still be found in the Ashley
area.
Sanders died in 1895 at the age of 51 and is burioed in the
I. O. O. F. / Ashley Cemetery. His wife, Elizabeth lived
to be 73 years old and died in 1916. She is also buried in
the I. O. O. F. / Ashley Cemetery, but without a headstone.
Etta Belle SUMMERS married Hugh "Berry" SMITH
(Grandson of James SMITH Esq. and Laura Jane
(nee TAYLOR) SMITH; and Great-grandson of Mary
Ross SMITH) in 1896. they made their home in
Ashley, and produced eight children; one of which is
my Grandmother, Helen Fern SMITH who married Ralph
LAMAR in 1924. they produced five wonderful boys,
Jerry, Ralph, Manley, James, and Paul. Manley Allen
was born 31 October 1931 and he produced with the help
of my mother, Janet Wooff LAMAR,
myself - Marci Allyne LAMAR.
